Why do you need to Level Up your Pokémon?

Pokémon is a game that revolves around raising creatures to make them stronger for battling. You start out with a Pokémon that you need to train and raise its level so that you can complete the Gym challenge and become the Pokémon Champion. The faster you level up your Pokémon, the sooner they'll get stronger.

What does Leveling Up do to a Pokémon?

Leveling up unlocks new skills and abilities for your Pokémon. Your Pokémon's stats would also increase every time you level up. And when you reach a certain level, some Pokémon evolve into a better and stronger version of themselves.

What are the Fastest Ways to Level Up your Pokémon?

The simplest way to level up is to just battle other Pokémon. Luckily for us, leveling up Pokémon has never been easier. With each new Pokémon game, Game Freak introduces new mechanics to make players' lives easier when it comes to leveling up. So whether you're struggling w/ beating a gym leader, or you are eager to max out your Pokémon's stats for competitive play, here are the best methods to quickly level up your Pokémon.

Participate in Tournaments

Feel like defending your title as the Pokémon Champion? You can always head over to Wyndon Stadium and participate in the Champion Cup Tournament once again. You'll battle every gym leader in the game including your rival, Hop.

If you have access to the DLCs and have finished the Crown Tundra's storyline, you can take part in a bigger and more difficult tournament called the Galarian Star Tournament. This time, you'll face not only the Gym Leaders but every other notable NPCs you faced in the game like Dojo Master Mustard or Sordward and Shielbert. You'll fight through a series of double battles and it would yield a ton of experience points for your Pokémon. You can take part in these tournaments an unlimited number of times so you can grind as much as you want.

Poké Jobs

Poké Jobs is a new feature also introduced in Pokémon Sword/Shield. These are small tasks that give additional Exp. points to Pokémon that participate. NPCs in the game will ask for help by posting Poké Jobs that require help from Pokémon. You can access these Poké Jobs using any Rotomi terminal at any Pokémon Center.

Poké Jobs can take from one hour to one whole day, but it works in real-time. The great thing about Poké Jobs is that it allows you to passively earn experience points and level up your Pokémon while you can go off and do other things, like say grinding it out on tournaments or doing Max Raid Battles.

Trade Pokémon

It's no secret that Pokémon you receive through trades earn more experience as opposed to Pokémon that you caught on your own. In fact, Pokémon traded from a different game of the same language will earn experience 1.5x faster and Pokémon from a game with a different language will get experience at a rate 1.7x faster than usual.

If there's a specific Pokémon you want to use for leveling up but haven't caught it yet, a good idea is to just look around and see if you can get it through a trade.

Use Items that Boost Experience

Unlike previous Pokémon games, Pokémon Sword/Shield allows Pokémon in your party to receive experience points anytime you battle, without the use of an Exp. Share. So a great way to take advantage of this new feature is by using items that boost the experience points a Pokémon receives. If you hold any of these items, your Pokémon would receive bonus experience points even if they don't participate in a battle.

The first item you would want to get is a Lucky Egg. When a Pokémon holds a Lucky Egg, it will gain 1.5x more than the normal amount of experience from battles. You can get it at the seafood restaurant in Hulbury City.

Talk to the chef and he will ask you to deliver three items for him. Once you complete the tasks, he will reward you with a Lucky Egg.

The other item you need is an Exp. Charm. You can only get it if you have the Isle of Armor DLC. Like a Lucky Egg, the Exp. Charm increases the experience gained by a Pokémon 1.5x more than the normal amount.

The cool thing about this item is that it's a Key Item which means that you do not need to equip it on a Pokémon to feel its effects. It's also worth noting that the bonus experience from this item stacks with a Lucky Egg, so you can use both to maximize the experience gained and level up your Pokémon faster. This item would be given to you by Hyde at the Master Dojo.

Max Raid Battles

This is the fastest and most efficient way to level up your Pokémon. A Max Raid Battle is a multiplayer feature introduced in Pokémon Sword/Shield. You form a group of four players and you battle one Pokémon that remains Dynamaxed or Gigantamaxed until the battle is over. You'll find Max Raid Dens around the Wild Area, the Isle of Armor, and the Crown Tundra. A Max Raid Den looks like a hexagonal rock formation with a beam of light shooting out of it.

While you do not get experience points per se after completing a raid, what you do get are Experience Candies. These are consumable items that give a Pokémon experience points when used. The more difficult a raid is, the more Exp. Candies you get. There are five kinds of Exp. Candies and each will give a different amount of experience points:

  • Exp. Candy XS: 100 exp points
  • Exp. Candy S: 800 exp points
  • Exp. Candy M: 3,000 exp points
  • Exp. Candy L: 10,000 exp points
  • Exp. Candy XL: 30,000 exp points

Not only that, you get a 25% chance to get Rare Candies whenever you complete a 5-Star Raid. Rare candies are better than Exp. Candies since it increases your Pokémon's level by one regardless of how much experience points it has. They are harder to get though, maybe that's why they're called Rare Candies in the first place.

The best part about Max Raid Battles is that you get to team up with other people, so you don't have to grind through these alone.

Although you can go at it solo, it would take a longer time to do so since you would be teamed up with NPCs that have weak Pokémon. If you learn to farm Max Raid battles efficiently, you can easily get enough Exp. Candies to get your Pokémon to level 100 in under an hour.

Just so you know how easy it is to get a Pokémon to level 100 using Exp. Candies, here's an example.

It only takes 42 XL Exp. Candies to get a Lv. 1 Lapras to Lv. 100.

So there you have it! There are many methods to quickly level up your Pokémon, you just have to find one that works for you. Hope this helps!
